Training Within Industry (TWI)
Training Within Industry (TWI) is a way to improve labor productivity and quality of work. TWI might be the most successful supervisor and team training program ever developed. TWI is a training program designed for supervisors and self-directed work teams that puts responsibility for quality and profitability back out on the shop floor and into the hands of workers.
TWI has three separate training elements that correspond to the skills supervisors need to succeed: job instruction (JI), job relations (JR) and job methods (JM). Each element has a simple four-step process for completion. This will mean pulling workers off the line for 10 hours of training, but it will probably pay for itself in a couple of months through increased quality, efficiency and employee morale.
Job Instruction: Proper instruction is more than just saying "Follow Jane and do what she does." It's the way to get a person to quickly remember to do a job correctly, safely, and conscientiously. Job instruction is great for companies with a large seasonal workforce, high turnover, lots of tribal knowledge that requires a knack to do things right or when work handoff conflicts between multiple job shifts.
Job Relations: Your complicated equipment comes with a user's manual and a troubleshooting guide. But there's no manual for keeping your employees working in top form. Job relations teaches supervisors how to work with employees to achieve productivity and quality goals, and the right steps to take when things go wrong.
Job Methods: employee empowerment in their job is more than just turning them loose and saying "Git 'er done." Job methods give a practical plan to help produce greater quantities of quality output in less time by making the best use of the manpower, machines and materials now available.
